Thermally modified wood with increased fire resistance

Library of Challenges

Short description: Wood is easily combustible and decreasing its fire sensitivity allows us to use it in tall buildings. Innovative solutions are needed to provide safe living places, by manufacturers and architects. This challenge is new due to changes in legislation that restrict using wood in tall buildings.

Market potential: A new European directive is nearly completed (EPBD, The Energy Performance of Building Directive) and in this context many buildings will be reconstructed, hopefully using wooden materials.

Timing: Thermory is ready to proceed as soon as possible. Solutions are needed in a short time frame.

Desired result: Desired outcome would be to improve the surface properties of thermally modified wood in a way that would allow application of water-based, environmentally friendly and long lasting fire retardants.

Information on challenge owner: Mid-Cap (250-3,000 staff).

Market presence of challenge owner: Global presence.

Keywords: Safety in high rise buildings; Fire resistant thermowood; Fire retardant coatings; Sustainable construction materials; Bonding ability of wood surfaces
