Reduction of microplastics and water usage in laundry services

Library of Challenges

Short description: By washing synthetic clothes, microplastic particles accumulate in the wastewater, at the same time we use enormous amounts of water for washing, and its resources are limited. A sustainable, circular solution is needed to reduce the water usage and capture microplastics.

Market potential: The potential for using this type of solution is in different industries. The legal basis is being prepared in several EU countries for washing machine to include a microplastic filter.

Timing: Solutions are needed as soon as possible, especially solutions that will not require the purchase of a new machine but only upgrade existing washing systems.

Desired result: The solution would primarily help or reduce environmental pollution and the consumption of limited drinking water, consequently reducing the carbon footprint. Cleaning businesses (laundry, car wash) in areas where water shortages are already present could work smoothly even in dry times.

Information on challenge owner: Small SME (10-49 staff).

Market presence of challenge owner: Active in one country.
